Film: The Dark Knight Rises

Rating: 4/5
Certain cinematic moments stay with us for a very long time and Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises has plenty of such magical moments to savour. From Batman’s thrilling entry to Bane blowing up an entire Rugby field to Bruce Wayne climbing up the walls of Bane’s underground prison, there are plenty of jaw dropping moments in this Christopher Nolan’s epic conclusion to the Batman series.
It has been Eight years since Batman last appeared in the Gotham City skyline, Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) has become a recluse living with his trusted butler Alfred (Michael Caine) in his ancestral house. While Bruce believes Gotham will no longer need Batman, all hell breaks loose when Bane (Tom Hardy) captures the Stock Exchange and has plans to completely destroy Gotham. A small theft by Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) causes the stocks of Wayne Enterprises to come crashing down and Bruce becomes bankrupt. It is upto Bruce to Rise again in order to save Gotham with the help of Catwoman, Comissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman), Rookie Cop Blake (Joseph Gordon Levitt) and the R&D Executive of Wayne Enterprises Fox ( Morgan Freeman). The plot has plenty of twists, mind blowing action sequences and few emotional moments with some references to Batman Begins.
Nolan beautifully sets up the action pieces and the chase sequences are among Nolan’s best. However the first half unfolds liesurely at places and lacks the thrill and excitement of The Dark Knight. However, Nolan knocks it out of the park in the second half. The last one hour is gripping, full of twists and the climax extremely satisfying. Bane’s idea of bringing in a people’s court to punish the rich and affluent beautifully questions the fine line between good and bad.
Christian Bale is brilliant as usual and lives the character of Batman and his alter ego Bruce Wayne. Morgan Freeman and Gary Oldman are good while Michael Caine gives a big emotional wallop as Alfred. However Tom Hardy’s Bane is a no match to Heath Ledger’s legendary Joker. While Bane is physically huge, he is more of a schemer and lacks the maniac charisma and unpredictability of The Joker.
The romance between Bruce and Miranda Tait (Marion Cottilard) is unconvincing but the scenes between Bruce and Catwoman are good fun. Anna Hathaway plays Catwoman with a lot of intrigue and it is diffucult to gauge her intentions right till the end.
Hans Zimmer gives another stunning background score which not only amplifies the tension but also increases the emotional connect. Batman’s new vehicle, a flying object called the Bat is the most spectacular piece of design of the series.
I am going with 4 out of 5 for Chirstopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. Not as dark and deep as the The Dark Knight and lacking a powerful villian, it is still a solid chunk of storytelling with some spectacularly set action pieces and a satisfying finale. A perfect ending to the Legend.
