English Vinglish - A perfect comeback for the Veteran

So here comes the Diva after 15 years of break from the silver screen and she is still the same veteran.
So Shashi Godbole (Sridevi) is a perfect Indian house wife with all the gracefulness one can imagine, running a small catering business of making laddoos. Though she is quite cool with respect to her daughter wearing short skirts, going to CCD’s with boys n stuff, the only problem is that she can’t understand or speak English. For this matter she is made fun of by her daughter and husband. And like almost every “bhartiya naari”, despite of getting hurt again again, still stands with her family.

When called for her niece’s wedding to NY, she is encountered by the ghost of her inability to speak English. She joins a course for learning English. The scenes from the English class add most of the humour to the film. Film ends with Shashi raising a toast on the wedding in pure English infront of her family.

As it may appear from the title, the movie is not about learning English or something, it’s about how a family should not take its member for granted and make fun of. As clear from the last scene of the muvee “The family’s function is to love and respect each other and help if someone is not at the same level”. One may find the chemistry between the French guy and Sridevi unimportant, but they lend the much needed confidence to our Shashi, who has lost it after so many years of making fun and ignoring. The talks between Sridevi speaking in Hindi and the French Guy speaking in  French lends the feeling that language is a such small part of communication.

Muvee also deals with other issues such as a male dominated Indian society and being homosexual with ease and not getting much preachy. And I think tha the best part of Guari Shinde, whenever we feel like the muvee is going into dramatic dialogues ( with all of yawning!!),  it cruises without getting much into it.
Cameo by Amitabh Bacchan is just awesome and makes the whole scene a joy to watch. Music by Amit trivedi is soothing to ears and loveable , especially the Marathi song “Navrai Majhi”. You can literally feel the NY through the cinematography. The NY Skyline, Times Square, Empire state building are all captured beautifully.

Overall, an awesome experience and you come out of theatre happy and feeling good. And Sridevi can very well remind you of your Mother J
